Jill Smedstad, Executive Director

Jill joined the JSWCD team as Executive Director in spring 2023, bringing more than fifteen years of experience in conservation and sustainability program management and operations. Her previous roles include managing sustainability programs at Southern Oregon University, serving with the US Peace Corps as an agriculture development volunteer in Ethiopia, and managing AmeriCorps programs as Regional Supervisor for the Montana Conservation Corps. Born and raised in Silverton, Oregon, Jill received a bachelor’s of science in sociology from Southern Oregon University with a concentration in environmental sociology. Jill also has a master’s degree in geography from Oregon State University, where she focused on assessing the effectiveness of adaptive and collaborative natural resource management for climate adaptation and resilience. While at OSU, Jill served as a program evaluation consultant for the National Riparian Service Team’s Creeks and Communities Strategy, and assisted with research to better understand landowner motivation for implementing rangeland conservation strategies across the US West. 

Jill and her husband have two children and together they go on many excellent adventures exploring Southern Oregon and Northern California.
